Sanqingshan

Forty-eight granite peaks. A Taoist cathedral.

UNESCO World Heritage. One billion years of erosion, sculpted into pillars and dragons. The Oriental Goddess has watched the valley for longer than recorded history.

Sanqingshan is named for the Three Pure Ones of Taoist cosmology, and the mountain itself appears to have been carved with the theology in mind. Forty-eight granite peaks rise above a sea of cloud. The Oriental Goddess, a 128-metre stone pillar, sits in the lotus position at the summit. The Taoist temple complex — 238 documented cultural sites — was laid out 1,600 years ago. Walking the cliff-face boardwalks at dawn, before the cable cars open, is one of the quieter experiences in modern China.
