Longhu Mountain

The birthplace of Taoism, on red cliffs.

1,900 years ago, Zhang Daoling founded the Celestial Masters school on this red-rock landscape. The hanging coffins of an older people still cling to the cliffs above the river.

Longhu — Dragon-Tiger Mountain — is one of Taoism's four sacred peaks and, by most accounts, its first. The Tianshi Mansion at its foot has housed the Celestial Masters since the second century. The Luxi river that winds between its red Danxia cliffs carries bamboo rafts past a stranger geography still: the hanging coffins of the ancient Guyue people, placed in cliff caves two thousand years ago by means no scholar has yet fully explained.
